The first thing is that VPS is supporting technology like for example some VPS does not support ReactJS with Django technology and second if VPS is supporting database as some VPS are limited to PHP and MySQL DB and does not support ProgreSQL or MariaDB or MongoDB depending on your application.
There are a couple of things you need to remember. The kind of hosting you need to choose depends on the kind of website you are trying to running. If you are planning a simple blog, shared hosting will be fine, but if you intend to run a forum or online store, you might have to use VPS or even Dedicated Server.
