Has a webhost ever closed down while you had a site?

This never happened to me, but I have always been curious to know what happens if a webhost were to somehow just stop working, or they closed shop. I imagine your site is safe, but it probably won't work. Do you know if there is any lasting affects for a site to lose their web host at any moment?

This has happened to me once. However, I was hosting a test site so when the host closed down, I did not lose anything. Interestingly, I got the hosting service for posting on forums, so I did not even lose any money.
