A business investment can reap profits in a short period of operation if everything goes right. But on the downside the losses can also be incurred in a short period. With a long term investment particularly real estate the profit is slow but it is a sure winner in my books. That is my primary investment.

Not all investments have a contract. When you invest in stocks you buy and you get the certificates of ownership. You can keep that for a long time if you want because there is no expiration. You can also sell the stocks if you need the money. Even in forex trading there is no expiration on how long you will hold onto the currency.
