I have been a manager several times and my policy is to be strict with the rules. That doesn't mean I cannot be friendly with my subordinates. Especially after office hours we go for a drink or we play billiards. My leadership is not the soldier type but more of a politician with diplomacy as my tool. When there is a problem with the performance I push the employee to do the right thing on the right time. Most of the times nice words are effective.
