To learn how to become a software developer, you need to know basic algebra and practice strong problem–solving skills. In contrast, if the project specifically requires certain mathematical functionality, then yes, you will absolutely need to know some math.

When I was at university, I saw that programmers needed at least Calculus II and Linear Algebra, but no advanced courses beyond them. I don't really know why.

You need a basic understanding of numbers and patterns. As far as I know, you do not need to be an expert in math. I know both high school dropout developers and college graduate developers. It really depends on what you are developing and to what extent I think.
