Cryptocurrency mining has been on the rise, and it's been a hot topic due to its potential environmental impact. Can anyone provide some insight into this issue? How can we weigh the potential benefits of cryptocurrencies against their environmental footprin

I don't think it is. Main reason I say this, is because of how much computing power you need to mine crypto like Bitcoin for example. I hear you need a lot of PCs and GPUs to run simultaneously to mine crypto. If you know already, Server houses or whatever (where servers are housed) created a lot of heat and consumes a lot of power. It is said that it's not very environmentally friendly. If anything, it's bad for the environment. Consider the amounts of energy consumed when mining, it's quite a lot.

As much as I feel so many people would rather that it was good for the environment because of the potential of crypto mining, it is not something I feel is good for the environment due to the fact that you do use a computer which also uses electricity and due to how electricity is provided, we already know that it is not good for the environment and this only uses more due to how long you need your PC to be on for.

Cryptocurrency mining can have significant environmental impacts, depending on the methods used and the energy sources involved. Cryptocurrency mining has raised concerns about its environmental impact, particularly when using energy from fossil fuels. However, the situation is not uniform across all cryptocurrencies, as some projects are actively exploring and adopting eco-friendly alternatives.

in fact, as you rightly say, there are many major cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin that is transitioning to renewable energy progressively, in the latest reports on Bitcoin mining the results were that almost 60% of its production was done with renewable energy, for which is far from being as contaminating as years ago, although it is still not a totally "green" process

The only issue related to crypto mining is energy consumption. The energy consumption is so high that it is even contributing to the carbon footprint. This problem can be addressed by using renewal energy and green energy instead of fossil fuel.
