What's the process to patent a product?

When it comes to setting up a patent for something you have created, what is the usual process for getting a patent on something? I imagine you have to file your patent, get it cleared by whoever runs it all and go from there. What exactly is the process? Does anyone know it? I have some ideas for products I might try and patent and I figure if I get my ideas out there, maybe there could be money to be made.

In order country, there is a government agency that deals with patenting and copyrighting intellectual properties. YOu can apply to patent your idea, product or service through this agency. maybe this kind of agencies are also available in your home country.
