How does a business even establish their own stock?

I have yet to invest in stocks or shares, I have put it off because I have no clue what I'd be getting into. I know there are ways to make money investing in stocks, but how does one go to start one? I'm sure you need a business, or LLC or something. Do you have to have a lot of profit to make it happen?
