Gaining digital marketing experience

After working in marketing for three years for a small bank, before changing to my current very unrelated job, I've decided I want to officially have a career in marketing, more specifically digital marketing. The marketing job I had barely covered any digital marketing and was more traditional marketing so I'm starting from the bottom. I'm officially starting university in a couple of weeks so in a few years I'll have my degree specialising in digital marketing. However I want to gain some experience before I finish my degree to put me in good stead for a decent job.

How would you go about gaining digital marketing experience if you were in my position? Would you start your own projects, volunteer somewhere etc?

Well, I must tell you that most of the successful e-commerce stores are pretty old. One of the popular e-commerce store in our country is Daraz. It was started in the year 2015. This may not sound too old. However, I live in a country where the concept of e-commerce store has been introduced recently. This means that it takes a very long time to achieve success in case if you are running an e-commerce store.
