Are image boards still popular?

I remember when people flocked to sites like 4chan, an image board that pretty much allows everything. I never liked that site, but I know image boards were popular for a bit.

Are they still popular? Would starting an image board today be good or bad?

In the past, I have used image boards. Some of these image boards were paid to post boards where users could earn by publishing images. However, these days I have not seen any active image boards.
