If the token you have is on any exchange, you can easily transfer the token to such exchange by copy the exchange designated ethereum address for that token and send a test token i.e a few token. Once the sent token appear in your wallet on that exchange, you can proceed to send the rest and trade it for ether.

The difference is much all because you can't use the same wallet to receive them,each crypto currency have their own wallet so one must not make any mistake by using another wallet for another coin unless is ready to lose it then.
