Major search engines don't like it. Well, I know Google penalizes it for one thing. Anyway, I sort of see the logic, but I think the issue is very complex. It's not so black and white.

A lot of big media companies like Forbes publish sponsored content. They are basically selling backlinks to other companies and individuals. If you have a lot of money, you can pay Forbes to publish about your site and get backlinks. No body admits but almost everyone is buying and selling backlinks
