I wouldn't say enrolling in courses is essential to be able to become a writer but is an option if you want to become a better writer. I myself never enrolled in any courses to become a writer and I work as a freelance writer now myself from home the only learning I did regarding grammar and spelling was English at school. It is not needed to be a writer as long as you can write in a particular language very well but it is needed to be a very good writer because only good writers will get jobs almost every time
