How Can Forums Survive in the Age of Social Media

If you check the history of internet, you will find that online forums are older than social media sites. Online forums were already popular long before social media came into existence. However, if you check the current scenery, you will see how far social media has gone and how backward online forums are. How do you think online forums can survive in the age of social media?

Online forums today can only survive with the content it offer and with the community it is able to create, many people go to forums simply to talk to people they have met in that community, if you create a good community, the forum will survive longer.

The problem I see is it is really difficult to get loyal users. For instance, you can see people going to facebook and post every day or even multiple times a day without expecting any kind of reward. Something like this is not happening on forums.
