It is absolutely safe to invest in ethereum now because Ethereum is a Cryptocurrency that is on its way to the top in term of its value. I believe that it's Ethereum's turn to experience the kind of exponential increment In value that Bitcoin experienced in the tail end of last year.

I think it's not too late to buy ethereum because ethereum might rise to about $5000 in few years to come. But in the short term I think ethereum might come down to about $500 probably before the end of the year, and that could be the right time to start buying.

It is never too late to invest in etherium if the market value is low. You are only advised not to buy crypto if the market value has appreciated so much so that you won't run into loss if there is a sudden decline in market value.
