What Is an Appendix, and What Does It Do?

What Is an Appendix, and What Does It Do?

The appendix is a small organ on the right abdomen's lower side. Biologically there is no known function of the appendix, but studies have found that the appendix contains numerous bacteria and mostly food particles. Appendicitis is the inflammation of the appendix. This is usually a result of bacterial infection and could also result from accumulated food particles leading to infection and acute painful inflammation.

Appendicitis is dangerous and requires immediate medical attention to prevent rupture, potentially becoming a life-threatening condition that may result in death. In addition, the appendix is dangerous as it could lead to blood poisoning. This usually occurs when dangerous bacteria enter the blood due to a ruptured appendix, resulting in severe shock sepsis, peritonitis, and sometimes death.

Acute appendicitis is a sudden onset of symptoms and requires immediate medical attention. Acute appendicitis may lead to a life-threatening condition if left untreated. Chronic appendicitis is a situation that the symptoms are mild and are not always a medical emergency. However, if it happens to be a bacterial infection, chronic symptoms of appendicitis could be treated with antibiotics.

SYMPTOMS

One of the common symptoms that could indicate the inflammation of the appendix is dull, slow-moving pains at the lower right side of the abdomen. These symptoms get worse during urination. Although symptoms resulting from appendicitis may not be persistent, sometimes, it comes, and the next moment the pain vanishes.
Abdominal pains become severe as the inflammation increases, and some patients sometimes have mild fevers.

OTHER SYMPTOMS INCLUDE:-

1) Eating less food than normal

2) indigestion or stomach upset after eating

3) Vomiting

4) Tenderness in the affected area

Causes of Appendix

Although the leading causes of appendix inflammation are unknown, below are risk factors that may likely lead to the development of appendicitis in the future. These are:

1) Tumors

2) Frequent and constant constipation

3) Building of food particles inside the appendix

4) Object such as stones and other hard particles.

Prevention of Appendix

There are no known ways appendicitis could be prevented currently.

Treatment for Appendix

Surgeries are the most frequent way of treating infected appendixes, which are as follows.

1) LAPAROSCOPY: This is an operation done with a laparoscope. A laparoscope is inserted into the abdomen through a small cut. A laparoscope has a tiny camera and other surgical tools. It is usually connected to a monitor for a surgeon to properly monitor and leads a laparoscope to the desired direction until it reaches the inflamed appendix. The infected organs can easily be removed without the need to carry out an entire surgical procedure.
Laparoscopy is better, and the patient can recover faster. However, this is usually expensive.

2) APPENDECTOMY: This is generally in cases with an emergency and complicated procedure. It is a complete surgical procedure involving an immediate skin opening to remove the infected appendix manually with the help of surgical tools. This is slightly cheaper in most countries but usually takes longer to recover. The average recovery time is between a period of five months to two years

Conclusion

Appendicitis surgical procedures are minor surgeries, and patients may recover perfectly without side effects. However, complicated surgical procedures take longer than one without complexity.

I have a couple of relatives who had to be rushed into the hospital for emergency treatment because of appendicitis. Sometimes people's lives can be in danger because of appendicitis. sadly, there is no way you can do anything to stop this from happening.
