This was used to create brand awareness in those days and to improve upon the sales of a particular business . Do you still see this as an effective way to embark on marketing?

It is very effective but it depends on what you are selling. It is not every business owner that will be able to use this marketing strategy for everything that they sell.
 
I don't see door to door marketing as a viable advertisement method anymore. This is because people find it uncomfortable to have people popping up in their homes to sell something. It is best for companies to adopt new ways of advertisement.
