How Lockdowns are Affecting Peoples Mental Health

It is over a year now with over 112 million cases of COVID reported globally with 2.47Million deaths. Fortunately, the have been over 63 million people who have recovered from the virus; this is a good signal. Coupled with the ongoing vaccination drive, things seem to be looking up.

But how have the pandemic and the lockdown measures affected people’s mental health? This is the big question that most governments fail to ask. There has been a huge increase in stress and depressions during this period. Most of which is caused by the fact that hundreds of thousands of people either lost their jobs or got pay cuts. Such drastic and abrupt changes in incomes have affected a huge number of people mentally.

Additionally, some people have also been affected by virtue of being dependents on those who lost their jobs. I have personally been a victim of job cuts, and I would say for a moment before I got something to do online, I was falling into depression. The sheer lack of money and ability to cater to your family needs can really plunge you into depression and eventually affecting your mental health.

All over the world, in the past year, there have been increased cases of divorce, suicide, early marriages, and unwanted pregnancies. All these are a result of the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 lockdown measures and resultant economic recessions that have impacted negatively on mental health.

Those who are worse hit are those who already had some kind of mental illness and those who were abusing substances. It was reported that 40% of Americans reported symptoms of anxiety and depression. This is up from the 10% that was reported in 2019.

The effect of the pandemic on mental health differs from one demographic group to the other. For example:

How Lockdowns are Affecting Peoples Mental HealthKids have had a number of negative pandemic-related issues like the closure of schools, and declining incomes which have led to poor mental health. During the pandemic, youths from the age of 18 – 24 reported greater than average symptoms of anxiety and depression. Over 56 percent of youth around the world are more likely to engage in drugs and suicidal thoughts. The youth are already vulnerable to mental health problems, the lockdown has just accelerated the cases.
Evidence from previous economic downturns has shown that job losses and salary cuts have led to increased anxiety, depression, distress, and low self-esteem. During the pandemic, adults have recorded higher rates of symptoms of mental illnesses in households with the case of job cuts or reduced income.
Further research during the lockdown period showed that children and their parents, especially the mothers with poor mental health are on the increase. This is brought about by the issues related to school closures and lack of proper child care. Women with children are more likely to be affected by mental health-related problems than men. Mothers have been experiencing depressing conditions, higher anxiety compared to their men counterparts.
Workers who provide essential services such as medical staff, grocery vendors, mail and package delivery workers have reported a higher rate of poor mental health. This is because they expose themselves every day to conditions that can cause them to catch the virus. This will eventually increase anxiety and depression and thus poor mental health.
It is high time that governments all over the world should consider prioritizing the treatment and management of mental health cases before they become a pandemic on their own. Proper measures should be taken to guard the population against deteriorating mental health even as the government is grappling with the vaccination plans.

The issue of mental health has taken centre stage since lockdown was effected. Recently we saw Naomi Osaka quit Wimbledon because of her mental health, and more people are coming out to raise awareness about this issue we've been so scared to discuss for a long time. This issue will linger for some time and it's better that way.

This is a very serious issue that everyone tend to ignore. Around my area here, there where cases of suicide, as some could not take it anymore. I bet they might have been feeling extremely lost and depressed, having a family to care for with no job. And someone once said, a man without money, is like a disabled man.

Explain to me how mental health will not be affected when some people's means of livelihood are being taken away from them by restrictions of the not going out

The pandemic lockdown has affected people emotionally and mentally, in my area too when people are looking unto the government to support us financially and to provide food for us , but the government turned people down and lock them at home which really affected many people .

The pandemic and total lockdown of each country economy has taken a toil in peoples mental health. A lot of people can't think straight again and I really think the government should do something very urgent so that things will come back to normal globally

The lockdown actually made the people realize how much the government do not care. Provisions where made my WHO and other international bodies, money was given to the government to support the people, by providing food for the citizens during the lockdown, but they did notting, they kept it to themselves

Concerns about education and the future. Worries and concerns about their education (all ages), missing school (all ages), transitions and being away from school (primary school age), academic demands (secondary school age), their job (young adults), and general future uncertainty (young adults)

What lockdown did, was make everyone more isolated, and a lot more dependent on the internet. This is good, only if you happen to love working online. Also, I happen to know a couple of people who live in isolation anyway, so Covid didn’t have much effect on them one way or another.
But isolation, in general, always leads to boredom. And boredom can be a very dangerous thing.
If you’re not working online, there are many other things people can do online, even just looking for friends or someone to talk to can = trouble.
According to my niece, and she’s only 13.. she says nobody really “dates” anymore. People are dating online. And that’s it. She shows me who are boyfriends and girlfriends and these people have never met. 🤔 Ok so if this is how people are dating, what’s next.. online marriages? If that’s the case, I’m seeing a major drop in the entire population, if people are in relationships online only. And Corona was just enough to set the scene for all of this.
Everybody always wonders about “the end of the world.” Maybe the end of the world is already happening, slowly.
(Sorry, I didn’t mean to get all deep and creepy.) 👀😂

In my home country, numerous suicides occurred during the lockdown. While there is no concrete proof to link these suicides to the lockdown, experts are assuming that these suicides were mainly caused by the lockdown. They back up their claims based on the increase of suicide cases during the lockdown.

Lockdown has affected especially the students who are sitting in home watching phone for their online classes , it has actually affected them mentally , there is no real social interaction other than the video calls in Skype.

Well the effects on health is dual sided. Some people are worried about loss of job and reduced income and that leads to mental illness. Others are greatly relieved from their stressful jobs and are happy with this break.

It's a common saying that the whites are generally disturbed mentally whenever something disrupts their plans, it affects Africans too but it's not that obvious.

That lockdown really affected peoples mental health and I think it's really not worth it at all. A lot of people are not familiar with staying at home all day and not even for a day or two.

I agree with you. Lockdown due to coronavirus is a very serious issue. Our country is experiencing a new lockdown because of a new variant of coronavirus called delta variant.

Hmmm what county are you from?? It is well, how far has the lockdown been carried out. The painful thing about these lockdown is that in most cases some persons might have not been prepared

This is not something to take lightly at all. The lockdown has created a lot of boredom. And you know how people get to start behaving when intense boredom sets in. Not good at all

Lockdown really helped me to boost my mental health as I began practicing yoga and meditation because I had a lot of spare time during the lockdown. Sadly, for a lot of people it was unbearable.

I think this effect varies geographically and individually. To some testimonies I have witnessed it was good enough for them they learnt new things that boosted their health like exercise and dishes, to some another it was terrible being confined to an environment.

As the coronavirus epidemic spreads around the globe, it is causing widespread dread, anxiety, and concern among the general public. Because of the news of people dying and the fact that we are cooped up in our homes and have missed out on human connection, we feel anxious.
