How do I go about getting a patent for an idea?

I know there is a way to do it on your own. I also know it can be time-consuming and costly. I am curious if anyone here knows about the process. It is for a business idea I have. I don't want to go into details with it until I have patented the idea, for obvious reasons!
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office must receive a patent application before you can receive a patent for an invention. A thorough description of the discovery must be included in the request together with illustrations, diagrams, and other materials that make the invention straightforward.

In my own country it is a bit different, as you have to look for a legal practitioner but it has to be based on the field you are trying to patent the idea, if it is for an entertainment patent, then you have to find an entertainment lawyer.

I think I saw a company being advertised on tv offering people to make money for their ideas with parents.Maybe Google search ways.
I think the company is trying to come up with something. They may be looking for ways to employ other people or to allow people to make money but you are surely going to know that as time goes on.

I have never tried doing it so I do not know how can anyone patent an idea. However, I believe there must be a way to do it as an idea is also regarded as a property, intellectual property to be precise, and property can always be protected.
