I have a friend who recently just got an admission into the university in a rural area in Nigeria and she is urgently in need if good housing and needs to settle the payment before traveling down to school and she has no idea how much a self contained is worth.

You can compare the cost of rent of apartments in the rural areas to urban areas. Their is big difference between them. House is not all that costly in rural places. Like in my village, the value of rent for a one room apartment is $72 annually. while in urban place the price of a room is $145 annually. I hope you see the long margin now.

Rural houses are not really costly because most people are indigen of the land ,and will have their own houses. The few that rent are not charged much for it ,compared to urban areas

I have not been to Nigeria but for sure the rental in the rural area is much less than in the city by about 50% or even more because it would depend on the kind of town. Usually in areas, the availability of land is easy and demand is less, so its price will be lower.
To be honest here in Pakistan mostly ruler areas have monthly 10 to $20 rent per month which may vary from area to area.
