Ever receive random spikes of traffic even after not doing anything?

Was there ever a time where you had a site, lets say it was stagnant and no one was going to it. Maybe no one knows about it yet. Anyway, what if you somehow get random traffic to your site that has yet to be advertised or promoted? Has anything like that happened to you?

I have seen this happen a couple of times on my sites. I had a site that was receiving a few hundred daily traffic but one day suddenly it shared showing thousands of page views. Later, I found that my forum was being users by spammers to create hundreds of posts.
