Ever let a site go unused for a long period of time?

Have you ever let one of your sites go unused for years, and still paid for your domain and hosting needs? I've known sites that have been around for 20+ years and yet some of them haven't been updated in those 20 years. I look at the Space Jam website for the original movie. It's still up to this day and has been up since 1996 I believe. So why do they pay for the hosting and the domain name all these years?

I think it's great a lot of these old sites are still around, because it's like preserving the internet in a way. So in a way I hope these people keep paying their bills to keep these old sites up, even if they haven't been updated in many years. I still have a few blogs of mine still up. But to be fair, they are blogspot blogs, so they probably will be around forever lol.

If the site does not generate revenue and if the site maintenance is high, I will try to sell it. If I cannot find buyers for over a year, I will simply close the site. I cannot imagine running a site for too long that does not bring any profit.

If I ever have a site that I no longer work on or I have lost interest in, I tend to either sell it if I can find a possible buyer or instead I will let it expire and let it go if I am unable to sell it.

I tend to be very careful with how many sites I have so that I don't run into the issue of having too many and not being able to keep up with them so I do not run into this issue.

This is the same thing that I am going to do when I am in a similar situation. There is no sense in letting the site stay idle for years while I keep paying for maintenance. From which money can I be able to do that? I don't fancy taking such decision at all as there are a lot of needs that are seeking for my financial support too.

Closing a site can also be a financial blow, especially if you have spent a lot of money to create it and run it. Therefore, a closing decision shouldn't be lightly taken. I have closed down a couple of sites, and when I closed them, I moved content to other websites and just stopped renewing the domain
