Rice is one of the widely consumed products in Nigeria and west Africa.

But Nigerians prefer patronizing the foreign products than the locals.

When the border is closed for security reasons. That is reason why rice are most expensive bcs those that had in stock hike the price.

The restrictions of imported foreign rice and the means of production of local rice made it high. Checking for foreign rice why it that high is the rate of dollar against the naira and taxes paid at the border

So many things are responsible. Border closure is one , also the inability of the nation to produce enough quality and self sustaining rice is another one, the major producers of rice in the country are from the north when you calculate the cost of transportation and the time it will take to transport a full load of rice across the country, definitely the price will go up . A lot of different factors are responsible for the inflated price of rice .

The government's failure to open the borders is the major reason for this increase in the price of rice. Also, a lot of people are afraid of going into farming due to insecurity so low production is another factor.

Yes I agree with you that rice is very expensive in Nigeria because 90% of population eat rice because the think rice is affordable and as a result both poor and rich people eat rice almost everyday and another factor is that Christmas is around the corner which hundred percent of every population in Nigeria buy rice for Christmas celebration, this really make the price of rice expensive because most of the rice are not produced locally to meet demands

Rice will surely keeps expensive in Nigeria because our government doesn't make it easy for our famers and never provide there tools. They want to be the only one to be in charge of everything without assisting our famers and the only way we can get rice that's cheap is from another country but they don't want that

A rise in price may occur when the rice is locally made (not imported) in which the machines and other resources involved in processing are imported at a high cost coupled with the fact that the Government policies are not fully helping, these factors lead to high cost of buying food. Importation of rice is discouraged but they have to make sure that the locally made ones are affordable.

Rice is being this expensive in Nigeria due to the land border that the government closed to prevent what they called rice smuggling from neighboring countries and to protect the local farmers of rice from the foreign rice importers.

Farming is not seen as a lucrative business in Nigeria , the focus has always been on oil. Nigerla has a population of 200 million people or more , on the average most 80% household consumes rice daily. The number of rice of being produce annually is not enough to feed the entire population, there is need for expansion of rice production before the ban on importation of rice can be fully implemented.

Rice is getting expensive in Nigeria because of the closed boarders that have limited the quantity in circulation. The rice production within Nigeria alone can not meet the quantity demanded. So, this leads to increase of price for the little that is available.

Nigeria imports more rice than it produces. Before Now the borders were closed making importation impossible. The rice seller had to increase the price of the rice they had on ground. I believe my explanation have provided justification to your question

That syndrome of increasing the price of rice also happens here once or twice a year. It is the direct effect of hoarding done by rice traders. They have big warehouses where they store their rice and hold the release for a month. The market will be dry of rice and the price will spike. When the increase reaches a good level then that is the time that the traders would release their stored rice in the market. Until now the government has not arrested even one hoarder although there are proof and witnesses to the crime.

Why is the price of rice that expensive in Nigeria? The cost of rice in Nigeria is around the price range of $95 - $100 and increasing.

What could be the possible cause
I can't believe this, which time is the price of rice increase as this in Nigeria?. This must not be true because I bought rice on last Thursday and the price doesn't reached $85. Which area are you in Nigeria?.

Is rice in Nigeria produced locally? Or is it an imported product?
Rice is both produced and reported in Nigeria . The quantity of rice produced in Nigeria Is Not Enough to serve the masses, so more bags of rice were imported into the country. Recently government shut the borders against importation of foreign rice and thats why the price of rice is high in Nigeria currently.

The government closed the land borders earlier and this resulted in the increase in the price of rice, The local producers could not meet up to the demand if the consumers hence the spike. The land borders have been recently reopened but rice importation is still prohibited. This Christmas celebration will cause the demand for rise to go up so I expect the price to continue to soar higher.

The production plants in Nigeria are few and some even lack technical know how on rice production and processing .. even after that production quality is poor., suppliers go through a lot of protocol to import foreign rice which makes it expensive and lastly it's a festive food which makes the price spike up in festive periods

FG said closing the borders would create a demand for the local rice but as it stands now the opposite is the case cos not just rice but the prices of other commodities are riding.
Bad government have caused us alot in our country. Self centered politicians everywhere in our country. Making unfavorable laws all the time, making things more and more difficult for the subjects. Tell me why FG will shut the border down, when they've not made any provision for rice plantation in the country.

Currently, rice is somehow down in price in Nigeria, about $45 in price. But things aren't still better in the country, when it comes to price of food stuffs. We hope for it to fall them before the year ends, so that this festive period wouldn't be a dismal one with the high rate of food's stuffs.

Rice is becoming very expensive and almost impossible for the low income earners to buy because the government has banned importation of rice and they promised to empower more farmers to produce rice locally but they are not doing that... This is what is making rice scarce and expensive
