Of course, diversifying one's portfolio is very important. Different industries will not take a hit at the same time so effects of losses in one sector can be cushioned by profits or no losses of another sector. That's why this highly recommended.

This is why I think a lot of people fail when it comes to investing. They don't diversify enough and put all they eggs in one basket so to speak. If that basket busts open, you are left with nothing.
