I am not a game developer myself but my brother did take the game design in college and he also went to university as well to continue the course he was doing.
I remember him making a small indie game in college at the time with his friends, I can't remember for the life of me what the game was called but I remember it involving gummy bears.
Unfortunately, even though he spent 3 years in college and university, there have not been any jobs available here for him to jump on so he is waiting for something to come up and will jump at it when he has the chance. For now, he is doing factory work to keep money flowing.
